The retired Catholic Archbishop of Kumasi, the Most Rev. Peter Kwasi Sarpong has expressed warmth gratitude to lay professionals in Ghana who seriously participate in Christ’s office of righteousness.
Speaking at a public dialogue at the Christ the King Parish in Accra on Thursday, December 17, 2020, he said lay professionals especially parents must realise that they share in the church’s office of sanctifying by having a worthy life and seeing to the Christian Catholic education of their children.
He noted that since most adult lay professionals are married, they have a responsibility to learn the example of the preceded Saints.
The Arrupe Jesuit Institute in partnership with the Catholic Professionals’ Guilds have been engaging the general public to a dialogue series dubbed the “December Dialogue with the 2020 edition focusing on the topic Towards a Theology of Christian Professionals: Providing Some Indicators.”
The programme sought to shape minds and hearts positively by raising awareness towards issues and concerns that truly matter, away from the superficiality of contemporary society to depth of social and spiritual engagement.

As the lead speaker, Archbishop Sarpong, mentioned that in politics, the Catholic professionals would be on top of the game because of the word of Pope St. John II which says “what Africa needs is saintly politicians and holy heads of state,” which is on course in today’s Ghana politics, economics, business and academia and not the reproach on the integrity of Catholic professionals.
Enumerating some indicators, he asked young Catholics to review their faith and accentuate the role they can play as lay professionals in our contemporary church.
According to him, theology is the scientific and systematic reflections of the church upon the faith which seeks to correlate the gospel message with the Ghanaian situation while the Professional is a person who had studied or made his own a certain occupation or job upon which he lives.
Archbishop Sarpong thanked God that Catholics were gradually emulating the lessons of ecumenical dimension by giving space of importance to women in the church.
The Dialogue was chaired by Mrs. Mansa Nettey, the Chief Executive Officer of Standard Chartered Bank Ghana Limited with Dr. Gilbert Buckle, Public Health Physician as the Respondent.
Present was the Most Rev. John Bonaventure Kwofie, the Catholic Metropolitan Archbishop of Accra.
